Wheeling gears up to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most well-known and respected figures in the Civil Rights movement, and people across the Friendly City are gearing up to honor his legacy.
On Sunday, there will be a march that starts at the Windmill on Wheeling Hill at 1:00 p.m.
The march will include re-enactments and a choir singing hymns.
There will also be an interfaith prayer service held at the 4th Street Methodist Church directly after the march.
Committee members say this day is important for everyone to remember we all belong to one race, which is the human race.
"Because it's important to come together to remember Dr. King, to get encouraged particularly with some of the racial divisions and intentions that we've experiences in our nation," said Jamey Brogan, Director of WJU Campus Ministry.
"It'll be wonderful to have black people and white people, jews and gentiles, catholics and protestants, all being able to pray together, to share that all of our faith traditions direct us to treat our fellow human beings with justice and respect," said Rabbi Joshua Lief with Temple Shalom.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday, but the celebration will be held on Sunday.
