MILFORD — Even as department stores close across the country, the Connecticut Post mall has found a new anchor tenant to replace the former J.C. Penney.

Mall representatives announced that Pennsylvania-based department store Boscov’s will be opening its second New England location at the mall in October, bringing with it 300 new jobs. Boscov’s also has a store in Meriden.

“We’re excited to bring the fun and excitement of a Boscov’s to the Connecticut Post mall,” Boscov’s CEO Jim Boscov said in a news release. “We’re grateful to their management team for their creative approach, which made it possible for us to add another location in New England. We know that the values and exceptional service Boscov’s is known for will be a great fit in the Milford market.”

For 104 years, Boscov’s has sold an array of apparel, home furnishings, appliances and more. The family-owned business is based out of Reading, Pa., and has 46 locations in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio and Connecticut.

According to a press release, Boscov’s intends to remodel and expand the space, and will occupy 200,000 square feet split among two floors. Along with retail space, the department store plans to feature a candy section and an auditorium that would host live performances and community events.

“This is a brand that prides itself in its commitment to customer service, exceptional quality and merchandise set at a great value,” Ken Sterba, general manager of the Connecticut Post mall, said in a press release. “We know our community will embrace the addition of Boscov’s to our already diverse mix of retailers.”

J.C. Penney closed in July costing 89 jobs. It has stores in Danbury and Trumbull along with five others in Connecticut. Its closure in Milford followed a national trend of closures and downsizing among big-box retailers and department store chains like Sears, Walgreens, J. Crew and more.
