Snow continues to fall across the Northland today, driven by gusty northwest winds and likely to cause a difficult afternoon commute in the region.
In many areas, the snow is falling on top of a light glaze of ice left by freezing rain overnight. Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings remain in effect across the region, the National Weather Service reported.
"There will be a slow diminishing trend from the west" in the snow during the afternoon and evening hours, the Weather Service reported.
Driving remains difficult across the region. The Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of Transportation report ice- and snow-covered roads across Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin.
Adding to the challenge in clearing roads: Temperatures have plunged across the region during the day. The Duluth airport dropped from 32 degrees at midnight to 3 above at 2 p.m., with northerly winds gusting in excess of 30 mph at times.
Several school districts canceled classes today (Jan. 11), including Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor.
