Derrick Brooks had one offensive rebound.

Wofford had one second-chance point.

They both happened in the final seconds Wednesday night as the Terriers beat Harvard, 63-62, in Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Brooks went up high to pull a missed shot away from players six inches taller and was fouled with 7.8 seconds remaining. He made one of his two free throws and Wofford held on by making a defensive stop at the other end, Cameron Jackson bothering two chances just enough.

Jackson also had an offensive rebound on Wofford’s epic final possession, chasing down a loose ball in the corner with less than 30 seconds left. Harvard had the overall advantage in offensive boards, 11-6, but the two by the Terriers at the end won the game.

“They were the difference,” Wofford head coach Mike Young said. “Cameron had a great save to a teammate and Derrick had a tremendous rebound.”

Wofford (11-5) won for the eighth time in nine games.

“Harvard is a good team. They were picked in their league and the Ivy has made great strides,” Young said. “This is a good win for our basketball team and I’m proud of them.”

Brooks missed his first free throw and said Harvard players were trying to add pressure on the second one by talking to him.

“When I missed it, I kind of knew it as soon as it left my hand,” Brooks said. “So I knew I had to make the second one, especially with their guys saying I didn’t want it and I wasn’t going to make it. But I live for moments like that.”

Unlike in Wofford’s last game, a 109-92 victory in which The Citadel tried to lessen the importance of each possession, this was the opposite. Every possession seemed critical. The Terriers cherished each one and had 14 assists on 20 field goals.

“That’s team basketball. That’s nothing new for us,” Brooks said. “Whether it’s a game or practice, if somebody has a good shot but somebody else has a better shot, we make that extra pass. … We knew that in order to win, we were going to have to make tough plays. That’s how tough teams win.”

Fletcher Magee scored 19 points to reach double figures for the 61st straight time. He also had seven rebounds and four assists with no turnovers. Storm Murphy made three straight 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 12 points to go with four assists. Trevor Stumpe had 11 points. Brooks had four points and seven rebounds in all. Jackson had six points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Wofford plays host 7 p.m. Saturday to Southern Conference favorite Furman, which beat Chattanooga, 73-55, Wednesday night and is 4-0 in league play.
