Crow Wing County will hold an informational session on the new Federal Emergency Management Agency mapping application from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Crow Wing County Land Services Department in meeting rooms 1 and 2.
FEMA completed a multi-year project to re-examine flood risks throughout Crow Wing County and develop electronic flood hazard maps. These maps, which were completed Aug. 15, replaced previous maps. Some areas on the new maps were not previously mapped.
Ceil Strauss, state floodplain manager, will speak on the following topics:
• What changes were made to FEMA maps in Crow Wing County?
• When is flood insurance mandatory, and when do local regulations apply?
• How to view the FEMA floodplain (FEMA sites & County interactive map).
• How to show if a structure is "out as shown" (not subject to mandatory flood insurance).
• Base flood elevations for FEMA decisions versus regulatory flood protection elevations for regulatory decisions.
• Where to find base flood elevations.
Map appeal options (letters of map amendments and letters of map revisions based on fill).
• Flood insurance basics (what rates apply where; what's covered).
