Prakash Pandey — a case of altruistic suicide?

| | Dehradun | in Dehradun

The manner in which Prakash Pandey committed suicide at the State party office when one of a Cabinet Minister was holding Janata Darbar underlies meticulous planning done by him. The psychologists are of the view that some persons under extreme depression take the step of committing suicide under the belief that they are doing it for a wider social cause.

The time and place chosen by Pandey to commit suicide highlights the deep anguish he had towards the system which pushed him towards penury and also underlies the attempt by him to teach a lesson to the system.

Noted neurophysiologist and certified counsellor of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Dr Sona Kaushal Gupta said that suicide is extreme form of chronic depression and in this case it appears a well planned suicide to catch the attention.

When asked if the case appears to be of a suicide where he was goaded by someone else to do it, Dr Sona Kaushal said that such chances are bleak. She added that from the information she has got from the media it looks like a case of altruistic suicide where the perpetrator does it in a belief that he is doing it for benefit of others. Dr Sona Kaushal added that depression is the root cause of suicide under which capacity of rational thinking is destroyed and the patient takes the extreme step of ending one’s life.

Psychiatrist and Deputy Medical Superintendent of Government Doon Medical College hospital, Dr J S Rana said that the attempted suicide could be demonstrative attempt aimed to gain attention which eventually proved fatal.

“Some people make a demonstrative attempt at suicide in the hope that they would be saved,’’ he said.
