Mumbai: 200 restaurants identified with fire safety lapses, says BMC

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 200 restaurants in Mumbai city which do not have fire safety equipments and are under fire safety lapses.

After the Kamala Mills fire and Sakinaka farsan workshop blaze which exposed the illegal restaurants and hotels running smoothly in the city, Ajoy Mehta instructed to take marathon action against them earlier and therefore the civic officials demolished total 624 in just a two days December 30 and 31.

A senior civic official from BMC said all these 200 identified hotels, restaurants have to fulfill now the fire safety norms within fifteen days and if they fail to do so then necessary action will be taken against them without issuing any warning notice.


He added the action will involve either licence cancellation or the demolition of the illegal structure completely. While BMC will soon set up fire safety enforcement panel at all 34 places to keep a close vigil on those who fail to follow fire safety measures. The BMC has made Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all entities which they have to follow strictly said the civic official. Along with marathon demolition, BMC also sealed 14 hotels among it.
