Now on the west coast, USC coach Clay Helton still finds time to keep up with his alma mater Houston.
Helton, who was back in town Wednesday night as a finalist for the Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards, has fond memories of growing up in the area and spending time as a player and coach at UH.
"This is a very special place," Helton said. "The people of Houston have been great to me and my family."
Helton attended Clements High School, where he met his wife Angela. He was later a backup quarterback for the Cougars, where his father Kim was head coach, and later joined the staff as a running backs coach. His brother, Tyson, also played for the Cougars.
Helton said he has been impressed with UH's renewed commitment to athletics in recent years.

"To be able to watch their success, even after dad left, and (see them) make an investment to the athletic program makes you proud as alumni," said Helton, who in his third season led the Trojans to 11-3 record and Pac-12 title.
An extra bonus was waiting for Helton when he arrived Wednesday at the Hilton Americas.
"I was the happiest ball coach on Earth because there was a Pappasitos in the hotel," Helton said. "I immediately went there because it's my all-time favorite restaurant."
