GIRARD — A new clock was placed in front of Girard National Bank to celebrate the 100th year of the bank and the 150th birthday of Girard.

The clock was dedicated to the late Martin Schifferdecker, previous president and chairman of the board.

His son, Mark Schifferdecker said he was glad to be a third generation president of the bank, previously operated by Martin and before him, Earl Schifferdecker.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “It’s a blessing to be a third generation in business. It is unusual today.”

Schifferdecker gives credit for the longevity of the bank to the staff and to the support of the community.

“We consider it very fortunate to be around this long,” he said.

The event landed on a special day, the anniversary of Martin Schifferdecker and his wife Sandra — they were together for 56 years.

“I know my husband would be so proud and happy for this occasion,” she said. “He loved his community … the words on the clock are true.”
The words on the plaque read, “In loving memory of Martin E. Schifferdecker, a dedicated husband, father, grandpa, boss, community leader, and Godly role model to all.”

The event and clock was the first piece of a year-long celebration of Girard’s 150th birthday.

“We are excited to kick-off the year with this dedication,” Chamber Director Julie Smith said.

On the day of Girard’s birthday, Feb. 28 there will be another celebration at the courthouse. The events have been planned and organized with the help of the 150 club, which is still open to new members who wish to participate. To do so, people may contact the Girard Area Chamber of Commerce.
