Commuters had to face inconvenience as autorickshaws and taxi cars kept off the road in Kozhikode city and Vadakara town from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.
The protest called by the coordination committee of motor workers’ unions was against the decision of the Railways to allow online taxi services such as Uber and Ola to operate with separate counters from the Kozhikode railway station.
The strike affected rail and bus passengers, especially those who depended on autorickshaws. The pre-paid autorickshaw counter at the railway station remained closed.
The protesters also took out a march to the Kozhikode railway station from Muthalakulam Maidan at 10 a.m. Auto drivers affiliated to CITU, AITUC, INTUC, STU, and HMS took part in the strike. They said that the operation of online taxi aggregators would affect their livelihood.
