Too weak to be sent back into the wild: forest official

The leopard, which was brought to the Nehru Zoological Park here on Tuesday after it was hit by a train in Nizamabad district, has suffered paralysis of hind limbs and lost control of the rear part of the body.

Officials said that the detached tail of the animal can not be reattached. The leopard was not in a condition to stand up due to the extensive nerve damage it had sustained.

“Due to damage of the tissues, we are unable to reattach the tail and injuries on its left front limbs are slowly healing,” said Dr. M.A. Hakeem, assistant director, Nehru Zoological Park.

He said that veterinary experts from P.V. Narasimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University examined the animal to assess the feasibility of performing a surgery.

Meanwhile, a senior forest official said that the leopard is unlikely to be sent back into the wild because its injuries have left it weak.

The official said that the leopard had suffered severe injuries and it would not be able to regain its strength.

“We are concerned that if she is released back to the jungle, the big cat may not be able to fight off attacks from other animals,” the official said.
