A 55-year-old Elyria man was sentenced Jan. 10 to life behind bars with the possibility of parole after 15 years for raping a 9-year-old boy.
John Mitchell Jr. was indicted Aug. 3 on one count of kidnapping and four counts of rape with sexually violent predator specifications.
He was scheduled to go on trial for the crimes Jan. 10 before Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge James L. Miraldi, but pleaded guilty and was sentenced instead.
According to a release from the Elyria Police Department, police became aware of the incident July 9 after the victim’s mother reported the boy had been sexually assaulted by a man staying in her home.
