By Tenzin Dharpo DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 11: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama told a congregation of Indian educationists that India should incorporate its rich home-grown ancient culture with modern education system in Pun, Maharashtra on Wednesday. “Modern education pays little attention to inner values and yet our basic human nature is compassionate. We need to incorporate compassion and warm-heartedness into the modern education system to make it more holistic,” the octogenarian Tibetan leader said during the key note speech at the inaugural ceremony of the 2nd National Teacher’s Congress (NTC). The Tibetan leader also said that the India’s ancient treasures are relevant in modern times. He said, “I believe that the rich understanding of the workings of the mind and emotions that we find in ancient Indian traditions remains relevant today. There would be great value in examining this and applying it, not from a religious point of view, but from an academic and practical standpoint.” The Nobel laureate who considers himself a student of the Nalanda tradition advocated that the country of its origin must adopt and revive it. “I have committed the rest of my life to the revival of these knowledge. I think of myself as student of Nalanda tradition. These are in Buddhist texts, but these knowledge of human mind, emotions, we should consider academic subject. Teachers are very important, you can really make some change. But in order to make some contribution to humanity level, first the ancient Indian knowledge must be revived in India,” the Dalai Lama said. The second edition of the National Teachers’ Congress saw over 8000 Indian and Indian origin teachers that work in the country and abroad congregate together to celebrate and honour its peers. Other speakers at the 2nd NTC were Mayor of Pune, Mukta Tilak, Rahul V. Karad – Executive President, MIT World Peace University, Dr. Anil Kakodkar – Padma Vibhushan & Eminent Scientist (Atomic Energy), Dr Vishwanath D Karad, Prof. S. C. Sahasrabudhe among others. |
