Suffers 60% burns; admitted to KGH

A middle aged man attempted suicide before Pendurthi Police station in Visakhapatnam city on Wednesday. He poured petrol and set himself ablaze in full public glare.

He reportedly suffered 60 % burns and has been admitted to King George Hospital.

The person was identified as M. Mahalakshmi Naidu (50), who is an accused in a murder case.

On October 14, Mahalakshmi Naidu had allegedly murdered his wife Rajeswari by beating her on her head with a cricket bat, in a fit of rage after an altercation.

Rajeswari (38) was employed at a beauty parlour at Gajuwaka, while he worked as a security guard at an apartment.

As per the police, the accused had asked his wife to quit the job and take care of the children, to which she declined .

He was arrested and released on conditional bail, later.

According to the police, Mahalakshmi Naidu confessed that he had taken the step out of fear, as his brothers-in-law reportedly threatened to kill him.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. in full public glare and surprisingly no one had rushed to stop him. “The entire episode was recorded by the CCTV camera that is fitted at the signal in the junction and we are examining it,” said Pendurthi Police Station Inspector J. Murali.
