Letter: Trump always ready to offer a boast

Like the rooster who claimed credit for making the sun rise, President Donald Trump does not hesitate to crow about his self-perceived triumphs. In typical fashion, he praised himself in a Christmas Eve tweet for having “led the charge against the assault” on the phrase “merry Christmas.”

This absurd boast was reinforced by a commercial funded by America First Policies, an organization established by former Trump campaign aides. The ad features a precious little girl standing before a Christmas tree and saying, “Thank you, President Trump, for letting us say ‘merry Christmas’ again.”

Wow! Some of us were not even aware that we had been forbidden from wishing our friends and neighbors a “merry Christmas.” Nor did we realize that our ability to express this sentiment has somehow been restored by permission from Mr. Trump.

What will come next in this president’s relentless campaign of shameless self-promotion? Having used family wealth and privilege to avoid military service during the Vietnam War and denigrated the service of John McCain and others, will Mr. Trump cite his heroic role in the fictional “war on Christmas” to claim the status of “veteran?”
