IT'S not every day a red-bellied black snake decides to hitch a ride on your car and scare you to death.

That was the reality for Ted Ogier after the slippery reptile came out of his bonnet while he was driving along the highway from Pambula to Eden on the NSW south coast on Wednesday.

Mr Ogier said was running a delivery for his work at Nolan's Auto Parts when the 2.5 metre long snake slithered from the bonnet, before wrapping itself around the driver's side mirror.

"It was sort of tapping on the window a couple of times, because it obviously wanted to get in," Mr Ogier told the ABC.

After nervously driving with the snake latched to his car for some time, Mr Ogier called his co-worker Kai Pearse came to the rescue with a broom.

"I just had a broom in the back of the ute and … basically just got him off the car nice and safely, and just ushered him into the bushland off on the side of the road," Mr Pearse told the ABC.

Nolans Auto Parts & Industrial Supplies have shared pictures of the hilarious encounter on their Facebook page.

The post has received almost 2000 shares and likes.

"Well poor Ted had an experience today driving back from Eden. He had a visitor on his car. I would have jumped out the passenger side and left the car in the middle of the road," the post said.

Horrified punters have commented saying they would abandon the car and set it on fire if it happened to them.

"Burn the car, quit ya job and leave the country," one person commented.

"Yeah nah I'd set the car on fire," another wrote.

"Legit abandoning my ute if this happens," one punter admitted.
