Snow, ice causing difficult driving in Northland; some school districts closed

Authorities report difficult driving conditions in parts of the Northland this morning as light freezing rain and snow continue to fall across the region.

Several school districts have canceled classes, including Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor. Find an updated list here.

The Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of Transportation report ice- and snow-covered roads across Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin.

The city of Duluth reported just after 6:30 a.m. that "plow crews have been out since very early this morning treating and clearing main roads and hills. Icy conditions will be challenging for commuters. Please drive slowly and take extra time. They won't be able to get to some of the residential streets till the snow subsides."

Many sidewalks in downtown Duluth were ice-covered and difficult to navigate.

Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings remain in effect across the region, the National Weather Service reported.

"A wintry mix of precipitation will gradually transition to all snow across the Northland today. Total snow is generally expected to be in the 2- to 5-inch range," the Weather Service reported. "Temperatures are expected to fall throughout the day, with gusty northwest winds developing from west to east."

Ashland, Hurley

Winter storm warning until midnight. Mixed precipitation changing to snow today; snowfall of 4 to 7 inches with locally higher amounts. Gusty winds may cause blowing snow.

Hayward

Winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Mixed precipitation changing to snow today; snowfall of 4 to 7 inches . Gusty winds may cause blowing snow.

Bayfield, Washburn

Winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. Mixed precipitation changing to snow today, with total snowfall of 3 to 5 inches. Gusty winds may cause blowing snow.
