Civilian killed, 9 hurt as cops clash with mob in Assam

GUWAHATI: One civilian was killed and two others — including a 14-year-old girl — were injured on Wednesday when police opened fire at demonstrators protesting against an alleged custody death in Dhula police station of Assam's Darrang district on Tuesday. Seven policemenwere also injured.

The deceased has been identified as Moinul Hoque. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered a probe and an indefinite curfew was imposed in Dhula area.


On Tuesday, Dhula police arrested Hasan Ali from Atakata Char for possessing illegal weapons. Police claimed Ali, who was being brought to the police station on a motorbike, fell from the vehicle and died. Ali's family, however, alleged that police tortured him to death.
