Pointing out the government's Rs 750 crore package which was announced on Wednesday for retired employees, sources said that trade unions might be invited for fresh talks today.
"We too understand the sufferings of the public due to our strike, but we have no other option as we took the decision (to strike) after waiting for years with our demands. If the government is ready to reopen negotiations, we will withdraw our strike today," sources said.
They added that though they might withdraw strike in view of Pongal holidays, they would not give up their demands. "We will wait for some more time, and if our demands are not met, we will strike again."
On Wednesday, the Tamil Nadu government announced a Rs 750 crore package to settle dues of retired employees. Making an announcement in this regard in the state Assembly under Rule 110 on Tuesday, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the above amount would be given to the retired workers before Pongal festival.
He said that the government has so far given Rs 2,147.39 crore to transport workers for pension benefits alone.
