Woman punched in the face during Devonport street brawl

Three Tasmanian men have been charged over a street brawl in which a woman was punched in the face in the hours after the Devonport Cup.

A video of the incident on Rooke Street near the Devonport Mall was posted online and has gone viral, with many people condemning the act as a coward punch.

The footage shows a number of people dressed in formal wear who are believed to have been taking part in Devonport Cup festivities earlier on Wednesday.

Bystanders can be heard yelling and screaming as one man appears to swing at the woman's head before she falls to the ground.

The men, aged 25, 32 and 34, are all from the Devonport area and have been charged with disorderly conduct.

Charges have yet to be laid over the alleged assault but investigations are continuing.

Police previously said crowd behaviour at the races had been pleasing, with just two minor incidents reported as one punter was asked to leave the racetrack and another person was charged with a traffic infringement.

More than 1,600 random breath tests were conducted on motorists before and after the races but there were no offences recorded.

The ABC understands the woman was taken to hospital but has since been released.

Anyone who witnessed the event has been urged to contact police.
