Toyota to Integrate Amazon Alexa Into its Vehicles

Automakers such as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Nissan, Hyundai Motor, Daimler and Ford, have already introduced Alexa voice commands that can operate vehicle functions such as locks and climate control. But it seems Toyota is going to be taking things a whole lot further by actually integrating Alexa into some Toyota and Lexus vehicles, starting as early as this year.

Of course, voice command in vehicles is nothing new. But up to now, most systems have been so inconsistent at recognizing what we're actually saying that few people ever use them beyond trying them out as a novelty when they first get the car. However, Amazon's Alexa has already proved its capability in millions of homes around the world, so it makes perfect sense for Toyota and others to adopt it as their preferred system of voice recognition.

BMW is another major automaker that has decided to bring the Alexa app into its vehicles, and this year Toyota will join the party by offering Alexa in vehicles equipped with either the EnTune 3.0 or EnForm 2.0 infotainment systems.

As for what Alexa will actually be used for in the Toyota and Lexus models it's going to be available in, the possibilities are almost endless. The Japanese auto giant suggests a variety of different uses, including taking notes and setting reminders, activating apps, or for controlling other smart devices, such as the heating system and other connected devices in your home. And of course, there's a good possibility you'll be able to order goods from Amazon, too.

It's a very forward-thinking move by Toyota, but a little odd when it still doesn't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity in any Toyota or Lexus vehicle. Despite the growing popularity of Amazon Alexa, it's safe to assume far more people use Apple and Android devices on a daily basis, especially in their vehicles.
