Exhibition showcases designs by Japanese weave master

Japan’s Junichi Arai – dubbed “The Dream Weaver” – was a master of dyeing and weaving. He was renowned for complex and innovative textile work that combined traditional textile-making techniques with experimental production processes, and contemporary Western technologies with Eastern methodologies. Some of Japan’s most famous designers, from Issey Miyake to Rei Kawakubo, have made clothes from his fabrics.

Lovers of his work will be happy to know that the first retrospective exhibition for the master in Hong Kong is on show at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Titled “Self-Organisation: Junichi Arai’s Textile Anthology Exhibition”, the event showcases some of his famous works including Light Vortex, Big Blue Vortex and Mountain Glacier.

Make some French connections

Lovers of jewellery brand Les Georgettes by Altesse can head to its pop-up in Harbour City to pick up some personalised pieces. Local favourite Rue Madame Fashion Group has brought over the French brand that is known for its fun concept of interchangeable and reversible coloured bands.

A cool taste of Nordic design

Another must-visit pop-up is that from lifestyle brand Skandiastyle on the fifth floor (shop 501) of Times Square in Causeway Bay. Expect to find a well-curated selection of 30 Scandinavian brands that truly reflect the region’s love and respect for minimalism and nature.

All lifestyle bases are covered: men’s and women’s wear, accessories, and interior and homeware, all picked from some of the most coveted Nordic brands. Runs until March.

Hats off to hat making

If you have a fascination with fascinators then this workshop is for you. The “Millinery Workshop – DIY Sinamay Headpiece” event looks at the use of dress hats, fascinators and royal millinery for different occasions.

Each participant will create a fascinator in the shape and colour of their choice made from sinamay, a natural fibre that is used in the making of headpieces. They will also learn about the structure of hats and fascinators, colour pairing, and trimmings, and – most importantly – how to set a fascinator to your head.

Wedding bells will ring loud at the JW Marriott Hotel on Sunday for its annual Luxury Wedding Showcase, held in its brand new ballroom. Newlyweds-to-be can find inspiring wedding ideas for decorations, bridal fashion, make-up and hair, while the “Taste of JW Wedding”, presented by the hotel’s culinary team, showcases menu delights (no shark fin please).

In the Loupe

Design incubation space Loupe is a platform for designers and artisans to get creative, focusing mainly on jewellery-making and design. One workshop – GIA Gemkids – is an experience-sharing event taught by professional GIA instructors who teach children the difference between minerals and gemstones.

A blooming good gift idea

Hong Kong floral artist Gary Kwok began her floral art training in Japan in the 1990s, launched a floral design business in Hong Kong in 1998 and partnered with Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani in 2002 to launch Armani/Fiori Hong Kong, a collaboration which continues to flourish today. She has also worked with a number of other luxury fashion houses, including Bvlgari, Cartier, Chanel, Christian Dior, De Beers and Piaget.
