It was a year ago this week-end on the night of Saturday, Jan. 11, 1941- that a bomb crashed through the street surface outside the bank of England, Jan. 7, 1942, causing the bank subway to cave in. The underground station booking-hall was wrecked, a number of people were killed and others trapped. Later royal engineers threw a temporary bridge across the crater and afterwards the road surface was reconstructed. Pictures of the damage at this spot where a huge crater was formed and of the subsequent reconstruction work have just been released. Parties of rescue-workers hard at work in the big crater after the roadway had caved in where the bomb fell outside the bank.
