Landowner faces fine for allegedly damaging historic Hilo cemetery

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

State officials are looking to fine a major big island landowner after unpermitted construction work damaged a historic cemetery in South Hilo.

Inspectors documented damage to a number of graves and a large crypt in the Amauulu Camp Cemetery. The damage was discovered in 2016

Photos show cracked headstones and uprooted areas of the property.

The graveyard is owned by the Edmund Olson Trust Two, and was being cleared without permits with heavy equipment. Large trees were also removed.

Olson now faces a potential $60,000 fine and about $5,000 in administrative costs.
