HARWINTON – Charles A. Hartwell, 76, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. He was the beloved husband of the late Nancy (Ashner) Hartwell.

Mr. Hartwell was born in Hartford on Feb. 3, 1941, son of the late Silas and Stella (Smith) Hartwell, and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and a retired machine operator with the Torrington Co., retiring with more than 20 years of service.

He enjoyed geography, history and anything pertaining to the Civil War. Religious in his own way, Mr. Hartwell will be remembered for his great love of his wife, family and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Charles A. Hartwell II and his wife, Diane; two daughters, Karen L. Pouliot and her husband, William, all of Torrington, and Lisa A. Robinson and her husband, Winston, of Harwinton; two sisters, Brenda Curtis and Ramona Hartwell, both of Torrington; seven grandchildren, Roxanne Zamkovsky, Cory Hartwell and his wife, Ashley, Thomas Hartwell and his wife, Amanda, Samantha Hartwell, Keyon Robinson, Anna Zamkovsky and Sean Hartwell; two great-grandchildren, Desmond Gordon and Abigail Hartwell; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Hartwell was predeceased by a brother, Robert Hartwell, and a sister, Marjorie Balise.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Full military honors will be accorded immediately following the service. Burial in Bakerville Cemetery, New Hartford, will be in the spring. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
