Twenty three members of the University Park Women’s Club Garden Group visited the Manatee County Extension Service facility in Palmetto on Friday, and Susan Griffith, Coordinator for Florida Friendly Landscaping program, presented an excellent slideshow explaining the reasons, principles and practices of the Florida-Friendly Landscape Program.
The program was developed by the University of Florida as a way of preserving and maintaining our natural environment land and water resources.
The theme of this program was “Right Plant/Right Place,” the first principle in practicing this program.
Each participant received detailed information on the nine principles, a plant guide, details on how to have their property certified and assistance from the Master Gardeners.
Many questions were raised regarding invasive species, such as: Brazilian pepper, cardboard plant, lantanas, orchid tree, etc.
Some of these are still available in nurseries and should be removed as they spread and push out native or more desirable plants.
To learn more about this program, visit manatee.ifas.ufl.edu.
This program and assistance from the Manatee County extension services is free to all residents. The nine principles are: right plant/right place; water efficiently; fertilize appropriately; mulch; attractwildlife; manage yard pests responsibly; recycle; reduce stormwater runoff; protect the waterfront.
