The National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) on Monday sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Odisha Chief Secretary regarding absence of basic facilities in a village in Mayurbhanj district.

The NHRC has given eight weeks’ time to the State Government to submit the report.

Earlier, Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain had filed a petition before the commission that 500 villagers of village Ashurkhol under Kaptipada block in Mayurbhanj district are surrounded by Kenduchua, Dulungi, Kalkalia and Bhalumara rivers, are deprived of roads, education, toilets, healthcare, power, BPL, ration card, bridge and other basic facilities which are violation of human rights.

She prayed the NHRC to take criminal action against the public authorities involved for violating human rights and provide immediate basic facilities to the villagers.
