WORCESTER - The Printers Building is losing a tenant that gave the Portland Street landmark its name. With cranes handling the heavy lifting, Miles Press this week is making the move to a new home in Auburn. On Wednesday, crews hoisted several printing presses through a window opening.
Rob Doray, co-owner of Miles Press, said the company he runs with his brother Jim is moving to the Sword Street industrial park in Auburn.
"We just outgrew the space, basically," Mr. Doray said Wednesday. "Right now we have about 10,000 square feet, and we're moving into 15,000 square feet, with opportunity for more growth and quicker turnarounds."
The ball started rolling on the move in October, and crews started physically moving equipment last month. He said the goal is to have everything in the new building by the end of January.
Some equipment is being brought out through the elevators of the building, but Mr. Doray said several large-format presses had to be taken out by crane.
He said Miles Press moved into the Printers Building in 1990, when there were several printing operations and binderies in the building. He said Miles was the last printer operating there.
He said 10 employees will be making the move. The commercial printer makes everything from business cards to annual reports and marketing materials, Mr. Doray said. He said Miles has been able to survive by staying "lean and mean" and adhering to tight budgets.
"We're very small," Mr. Doray said. "Everyone has a personal stake in what goes out the door, and what we're doing."
