DUBAI: Two of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks — the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab – have been given a Star Wars spin by Instagram artist Paperboyo — Rich McCor. He travelled to Dubai from London to create the Star Wars architectural artwork, in celebration of the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Unique
Rich’s unique work, in which he turns ordinary landscape photographs into clever artwork with a simple paper cut-out technique, has earned him a large following across the world (326,000 at the time of writing) within just two years.
In his artworks shot in Dubai, Rich created paper cutouts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi main character Rey, and much-loved droid BB-8, and positioned them against shots of the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab to create the illusion (respectively) of Rey holding the Burj Khalifa as a lightsabre and walking with BB-8 along the beach by Burj Al Arab.
Career highlight
Rich McCor comments on his work, “I’m a huge fan of both UAE architecture and Star Wars. Creating this bespoke artwork here in Dubai was a career highlight for me. Dubai has so many globally recognised landmarks and I enjoyed exploring the architecture – from Bur Dubai to Palm Jumeirah, to Dubai Marina.
“With such a rich landscape of varied architectural style, I was spoilt for choice as to which buildings to use for the Star Wars shots. However, I chose the iconic Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab as they are my personal favourites.”
