“Tiner Talwar” staged at JU

Five-day long drama fest begins

The much acclaimed production of Jahangirnagar Theatre 'Tiner Tolowar' was staged at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday night marking its annual Nattya Parbon (theatre fest). The theme of the parbon was “Unmukto Kori Somoyer Rudhhodhar”.

A large number of theatre lovers flocked to the Selim Al Deen Muktomancha on the second day of the five-day theatre festival-2018. Jahangirnagar Theatre (TSC) organised the festival on the campus.

The play was written by Utpal Dutta and directed by Hafizur Rahman Rana, General Secretary of the theatre.

In “Tiner Talwar”, Utpal Datta depicts 19th century Calcutta (now Kolkata) when the wealthy dominated exponents of theatre and propelled competition between established directors. This “play within a play” subtly mocks the so-called “Babu-culture“ and significantly upholds the struggles of the lowly paid performers.

The story follows a troupe called Bengal Opera and its members. Beni Madhab is the chief of the troupe, while Bashundhara is the veteran actress who nurtures maternal feelings for all. Young talents like Priyonath and Moina are also important members with their own dreams.

Performers Ashikur Rahman was cast as Beni Madhab, while Sumaiya Ferdous played Bashudhara. Sharna played the role of Kamini while Nur-e-Zannat and Farhan Shakib were cast as Moina and Priyonath respectively.

Among others, Shahinur Rahman, Firoz Mallik, Abu Sayeed, Saimun Islam, Esham, Jibon, Rono, Kader, Nazmul, Fahim, Pallob, Ovi enacted other roles while Selim performed as musician.

On the opening day, a popular play titled “Janamank” by Padatik Nattya Sangsad was held at the same venue. “Nittopuran” by Desh Natok was staged on the third day (January 8). “Massacre”, another JU Threatre production was held yesterday.

Meanwhile, Kazi Rafiq and Lubna Marium will be honoured at the event.
