Big Little Lies

Liane Moriarty's  page turner won big at the Golden Globes this year for the mini-series starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. Sending a powerful message about bullying, it's also a study in grown-ups behaving badly with a great mystery thrown in for fun. Get the book for Kindle, print or audio and be sure to rent or buy the binge-worthy series.

A Handmaid's Tale

This haunting novel by the great Margaret Atwood tells the story of Offred, a handmaiden in the distopian Republic of Gilead where women are no longer allowed to read, but instead are at the service of the elite, their only purpose to create children to keep society populated. Read the harrowing story and see the Hulu series starring Golden Globe winner Elizabeth Moss.

Same Kind of Different as Me

The movie starring Greg Kinnear, Renee Zellweger and Djimon Hounsou  won't be released for home viewing until February, but that gives you time to read the heartwarming memoir it's based on.  Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore tells the true story of a homeless drifter who grew up picking cotton in virtual slavery and an upscale art dealer and his wife whose lives are all changed by their friendship.

Dan Brown -- Da Vinci Code, Inferno and Origin

Dan Brown's brainy thrillers are sure to be made into blockbuster movies. His newest novel featuring symbologist Robert Langdon is Origin, which came out in October. There's no movie for that one yet but you can certainly see Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code and Inferno and pick up the entire Dan Brown collection to read.

Stephen King's It

The classic horror novel from 1986 has been made into two films, the latest a run away hit. The book tells the tale of Mr. Bob Gray aka Pennywise the Dancing Clown and the havoc this demon unleashes in a small town. Nightmares ensue. The first film is from 1990 and stars Harry Anderson, Annette O'Toole and Tim Curry. The second, released in 2017, includes  stunningly frightening effects and makeup.

The Zookeeper's Wife

Diane Ackerman's The Zookeeper's Wife is the true story of i the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo who saved hundreds of people from Nazi hands. After their zoo was bombed, Polish zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski managed to save over three hundred people from the Nazis by hiding refugees in the empty animal cages. Read the book, then watch the touching film starring Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh.
