Modern Family's next season is shaping up to be its last.
Showrunners Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd confirmed that they planned to stop the hit comedy, which is currently airing its ninth season, after Season 10 during The Television Critics Association's winter press tour. "Our plan is to end it at 10. If we can leave with most of our audience wanting more, I think that's the right way to do it. Never say never, but I just can't imagine that we'd go past that," Levitan told The Hollywood Reporter.
The groundbreaking series has been lauded for its diverse cast which includes Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Ed O'Neill, Jesse Tyler Ferguson Eric Stonestreet and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. The show also broke ground in 2016 when it cast TV's first openly trans child actor, then 8-year-old Jackson Millarker, as Lily's (Anderson-Emmons) new friend.
With the potential series finale now creeping up on them, Levitan and Lloyd already have a few ideas on how to end things.

"We went through these questions on Frasier, when we brought that around after 11 seasons and sort of said, 'Well, the Shakespearean route on that is a birth, a death or a wedding,' and we managed to effectively do all three in the final episode," Lloyd explained. "So it may be some conversation that starts there, but we haven't figured out the episode we're doing three weeks from now. It's just a little over a year and a half from now. We've got time to think about that."
Modern Family airs Wednesday at 9/8c on ABC.
