Some members of the media on Tuesday praised President Trump for allowing the press to stay in the room during his meeting with a group of bipartisan lawmakers discussing immigration.
What was supposed to be a pool spray at the top of the meeting turned into a 55-minute discussion between Democratic and Republican lawmakers as the press watched.
Some journalists said they can remember no other president inviting members of the press to watch negotiations before. A former adviser to President Barack Obama fired back at the press for suggesting it had never happened.
That was great @realDonaldTrump. You should do it again in the future.— Sam Stein (@samstein) January 9, 2018
Trump smart for opening immigration discussion to press. Public gets to see deal making POTUS at his best.— Steve Peoples (@sppeoples) January 9, 2018
Also: I have covered Washington/politics for 2 decades. I have NEVER seen a president invite the press in to film negotiations with Congress.— Paul Singer (@singernews) January 9, 2018
BREAKING: Brilliant move by POTUS - in the middle of the Wolff onslaught - he allows LIVE coverage of him working the table with Dems/GOP on immigration. Thoughtful, policy proficient and determined to get a deal.— Martha MacCallum (@marthamaccallum) January 9, 2018
"Obama did this with the House GOP conference in 2010 on health care on live TV. He would have done it every year, but the GOP refused to let cameras back in ever again," Dan Pfeiffer tweeted.
