‘All set for merger of 51 panchayats with VMC’

Krishna district Collector B. Lakshmikantham on Tuesday said that the much-awaited Machilipatnam deep sea port works would begin by June.

A day after a discussion on the possibilities of gathering the land with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Mr. Lakshmikanatham told The Hindu that the CM’s meeting with Machilipatnam farmers, held in Vijayawada on Monday, was fruitful.

“A deadline has been fixed to begin port work before June 5 by gathering the required extent of land (2,278 acres),” he said.

The Collector announced that 51 panchayats in the vicinity of Vijayawada would soon be merged with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. “Consequently, the population of Vijayawada will go up by 5 lakhs,” said Mr. Lakshmikantham.

ISO recognition

The Collector received a certificate here from the Geneva-based International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) for the quality management system in digital governance, e-office system, effective grievance redress system.

“Maintenance of the Collectorate campus with green cover, hygienic conditions, human resource management and office infrastructure are a few parameters which were taken into account for certification of the standard,” ISO Chennai Director B. Karthikeyan told The Hindu.

Aadhaar-enabled services adopted in distribution of fertilizer and public distribution system have also helped the district authorities ensure quality governance. The ISO suggested that solar power be tapped to run the Collectorate.
