Mallory, Cronin lift South Lyon East to girls hoop triumph vs. Lakeland

LAKELAND 5, WALLED LAKE WESTERN 2: White Lake Lakeland (9-4, 5-2) came away with the Lakes Valley Conference victory Jan. 8 over the host Warriors 5-7-1, 2-3-1) at the Kensington Valley Ice House.

LAKELAND 9, W.L. CENTRAL-WATERFORD 1: Ryan Stichler scored a pair of goals and added one assist leading White Lake Lakeland (8-4, 4-2) to an LVC win Jan. 6 over Walled Lake Central-Waterford United (1-11, 0-7) at Lakeland Ice Arena.

Tyler Martin also tallied two goals for the Eagles, who scored six times in the second period to end it on the eight-goal mercy. Max Cohen, Nick Hrobsky, Ben Getzen and Hayden Baker chipped in with one goal and one assist each.

Nik Cascianelli had the other goal, while Alex Libby and Blake Jackson each collected two assists.

Goalie Bryce Samoylov (10 saves) notched the shutout.

SOUTH LYON 11, W.L. CENTRAL-WATERFORD 0: On Jan. 5, Luke Turowski finished with two goals and an assist as first-place South Lyon Unified (7-2, 6-0) took two periods to mercy Walled Lake Central- Waterford United (1-10, 0-6) in a LVC game at Lakeland Ice Arena.

Jake Heffernan, Ashton Jones, Adam Zebley and Ryan Bigler each chipped in with a goal and two assists, while Anthony Joseph and Brian Plohetski each contributed one goal and one assist.

Caleb Mulcahy, Zach Pelletier and Gavin Ross had the other SLU goals, while other assists went to Brendan Stanfield, Alex Coutts and Aaron Caicco.

Goalie Andrew Lowen posted the shutout.

Boys basketball

MILFORD 45, WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 43: Senior guard Aiden Warzecha scored 14 points and senior forward Kyle Soderberg added 10 as the Mavericks (4-2, 3-1) pulled out a Lakes Valley Conference victory Jan. 9 over the host Knights (3-4, 1-2).

Jake Haver tallied 12 for Northern.

LAKELAND 56, SOUTH LYON EAST 29: Senior center Cass Phillips pulled down 14 rebounds and scored added 10 points as as White Lake Lakeland (6-1, 2-1) rolled to an LVC victory over the host Cougars (3-5, 0-4).

Jordan Shaw also chipped in with 12 points for the victorious Eagles.

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 67, SOUTH LYON 60: On Jan. 9, senior guard TahVaeyr Boykins scored a game-high 24 points and 6-6 junior center Spencer Brown chipped in with 13 as the host Warriors (3-2, 3-1) downed the Lions (5-3, 2-2) in an LVC game.

Senior guard Brian Averill and senior forward Noah Grimes paced South Lyon in scoring with 23 and 16, respectively.

SOUTH LYON EAST 55, CLARENCEVILLE 35: A 23-0 first-quarter run on Jan. 5 catapulted the Cougars (3-4) to a non-conference victory over host Livonia Clarenceville (1-6), which dropped its sixth straight. 

Junior Zach Oprsiui, who nailed three 3-pointers in the opening period, finished with a team-best 13 points for East. The Cougars, who led 36-9 at halftime, also got 10 from sophomore Nick Branton and eight from senior Marc Garland as 14 players saw action and 10 scores.

Rickey Scott and Bekim Lulanaj accounted for all 35 Clarenceville points with 22 and 13, respectively.

Girls basketball

SOUTH LYON EAST 54, LAKELAND 39: Senior Mackenzie Mallory tallied a game-high 24 points on Jan. 9 as the Cougars (6-3, 4-1) downed host White Lake Lakeland (0-8, 0-5) in a Lakes Valley Conference encounter.

Sophomore guard Lucy Cronin tallied 12 of her 20 in the final quarter as East outscored the Eagles, 19-12. The Cougars made 17-of-24 free throws.

Senior center Skylar Baer scored a team-high 13 for Lakeland, which made only 8-of-17 foul shots.

WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 43, MILFORD 24: On Jan. 9, Grace and Faith Fredericks led the way as host Walled Lake Northern (4-4, 3-1) defeated the Mavericks (3-6, 1-4) in an LVC game.

Milford, unable to hold a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, got six points and six rebounds from Olivia Seestadt. Lauren Carrananto and Jayne Bailey added six and five points, respectively.

ARBOR PREP 65, SOUTH LYON EAST 52: The Petree sisters, Mahri and Lasha, combined for 43 points with 22 and 21, respectively, leading Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (5-2) to a non-conference win Jan. 5 over the visiting Cougars (5-3).

The state-ranked Gators, last year's Class B state runner-up, sealed the victory by hitting 10-of-11 free throws, including 6-of-7 down the stretch after East cut the deficit to 55-50.

Mackenzie Mallory paced East with 22 points, while Lucy Cronin added 18. Rachel Waranauckas contributed eight as the Cougars tried to overcome a 31-21 halftime deficit.

Girls gymnastics

HURON VALLEY 130.775, HOLT 118.5: IN a non-league dual Jan. 8, Huron Valley downed the host Rams behind strong performances from Lakeland's Nicole Graham, Erin Murphy, Kelli Buckley and Paige Elwood, along with Milford's Morgan Hester and Vanessa West.

CARUSS INVITATIONAL: The annual Jeanne Caruss Memorial Invitational, hosted by Huron Valley United and featuring 21 of the state's top teams and representing 39 different schools, will begin at 9 a.m. with march and introductions at White Lake Lakeland High School.

The invitational is in memory of the gymnastics judge who passed away in 2012 of pancreatic cancer. Caruss was known for her keen eye and reputation of fairness among gymnasts, coaches, parents and fellow judges.
