The Black Eyed Peas are on the comeback trail with a new song about racism and police brutality.
Will.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo premiered Street Livin’ on Tuesday, accompanied by a black and white video, features scenes in which the trio’s mouths are superimposed on characters in historical situations.
“We have the POWER to make change together,” a message on the group’s Twitter page reads. “Prison Industrial Complex. Immigration. Gun Violence. Police Brutality. These issues are critical for our families, friends, communities, and world. Stay Woke, Take Action Now.”
The band’s website also includes a section where fans can take a pledge and receive information on how to stay informed about the issues covered in the song’s lyrics.
“In a world where our most basic human rights are often ignored and the system doesn’t respect us, a just future is only achievable if we come together and use our collective power to make change,” a message on the website reads.
The group’s fourth member, Fergie, doesn’t feature on the song. She took an extended break from the band last year to focus on her second solo album Double Dutchess, but assured fans she was still with the group after rumours suggesting she had quit surfaced.
“Fergie is still in the Black Eyed Peas and has an enormous amount of love for her brothers,” a statement from a spokesperson read.
