Mumbai: The Samta Nagar police on Tuesday detained a minor in Pune in connection with the murder of former Shiv Sena corporator Ashok Sawant.

Sawant, a two-time corporator and brother of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, was stabbed to death by two persons near his Kandivali residence on Sunday night. The two accused, identified as Suhail Dediya and Ganesh alias Gajanan Jokdand, were arrested on Monday.

“The exact role of the suspect is being ascertained,” an officer, who is part of the probe, said.

Inquiries have pointed to the murder being the fallout of a rivalry in the cable operators’ lobby, which Sawant was part of, or a Slum Rehabilitation Authority project in Dahisar, in which Sawant was involved.

The police are also on the trail of Jagdish Pawar, a former associate of Sawant, who is suspected to have masterminded the murder after relations soured between them.

Meanwhile, Dediya and Jokdand, were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody till January 18.
