Short-handed success for the Wave

There were a lot of bonuses for the Green Wave on Tuesday. Senior High scored three short-handed goals en route to an 8-0 win against Grand Forks at Eagles Arena.

"I've been coaching 30-plus years and I don't think I've ever had a team score three shorties before,'' Enright said. "And we've had some good teams.

"When you score short-handed, it's hard work and probably a bit of luck.''

The win improved the Green Wave to 12-4-1. Senior High totaled two short-handed goals in its first 16 games.

Cynthia Loven had two of the short-handed goals and Nicole Schlenk the other for the Wave.

Scoring short-handed "is more intense. You have to work harder for it,'' said Loven, who added a power-play goal in the third period for a hat track and her team-leading 25th goal of the season. "That makes it more satisfying.''

To get a hat trick on special teams, "that is so rare to see somebody do that,'' Enright said. "Cynthia is great for us. She has great skills.''

Mac McDonald and Livia Pesch each had a pair of goals for the Wave, with McDonald getting an assist for a three-point night. Schlenk had two assists to go with her goal and Kylie Stauss had three assists for the Wave.

The Wave led 4-0 and 6-0 at the breaks, with the third period played in running time.

Kenzie Whalen had 13 saves in the shutout win. Teresa Mattson had 39 saves for the KnightRiders.

Grand Forks coach Alex Hedlund said allowing short-handed goals is demoralizing to teams.

"We needed to take advantage of our power plays'' Hedlund said,'' especially in games when you're being out-shot like that. We have to take advantage of those situations. We had to be aware that, power play or not, they (Wave) are still dangerous.''

Grand Forks dropped to 4-6-0.
