T-Mobile US has thrown down a gauntlet, introducing a plan for NB-IoT for 6 USD per year, noting that price is one tenth of the cost of Verizon’s Cat-M plans. The new Magenta deal, available at this price for a limited time, will provide connectivity for up to 12 MB per connected device. Mobile also announced it has certified new NB-IoT modules from u-blox and Sierra Wireless for use on NB-IoT network.

The company said Magenta is especially idea for applications that require low bandwidth, long battery life and s large numbers of sensors, such as asset tracking, smart city applications or smart agriculture. There are Cat-1 IoT Access Packs for applications that require more bandwidth and voice.

T-Mobile is planning for NB-IoT nationwide coverage by the end of the year. It expects to launch Cat-M nationwide shortly after that. COO Mike Sievert said launching Narrowband IoT, based on 6GPP, was a giant step towards 5G IoT and that the number of connected devices was already outnumberbing the worldwide population.
