Obhibhabak Oikya Forum condemns beating of guardian ‘by schoolteachers’

Obhibhabak Oikya Forum, a platform of guardians, yesterday condemned the incident where a guardian was beaten allegedly by a group of schoolteachers in Cox’s Bazar.

In a statement, they demanded exemplary punishment for the teachers who reportedly beat the father of a second grader at Kharulia KG and Pre-Cadet School in Cox’ Bazar Sadar upazila on Sunday for protesting against “irregularities” at the school.

The victim went to the school to find out the reason of his son’s poor exam result. During a conversation with headmaster Borhan Uddin and another teacher Zahirul Haque, they engaged in an altercation. Later, the guardian was beaten up while his hands and feet were tied with rope.

Teachers are respected as they are recognised as builders of a nation but such incident is disgraceful for all teachers, the statement read.

“The nation is shocked at such vile incident. Those school teachers played the role of beasts,” it added.

Calling upon the guardians to be vocal about corruption in educational institutions, the forum requested the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take stern measures to prevent such irregularities.

In a different statement, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) termed the situation “absence of good governance” in educational institutions and condemned the local authorities of Cox’s Bazar for not taking instant action in this regard.

They also demanded justice while pointing out the existing problems in educational institutions including lack of proper monitoring by the authorities concerned and lack of dialogue between teachers and guardians.
