POLICE are investigating after a gun was found in a York road.

North Yorkshire Police said a roadworker approached a police officer at just before 10am today, to report he had found what appeared to be a firearm.

A spokeswoman said the gun was found "in a lay-by in Wigginton Road", and officers attended to ensure it was safely handled.

An investigation is underway to determine whether it is a live weapon or a replica.
