Mother Accused Of Driving Drunk, Crashing Car And Injuring Children

Angela Kennecke reports:

Madison, SD

A KELOLAND woman is accused of driving drunk and crashing her car near Madison. But she wasn't alone.  Her passengers?  Her eight-month-old baby and her 6-year-old daughter.

KELOLAND Investigates has been looking into what happened and this woman's past drunk driving offenses that made the news.

We got a tip from a viewer that 32-year-old Emily Bruns had crashed her car with her two young children inside and is charged with drunk driving.   We looked into it and got the details of what happened, as well as finding out that Bruns has been in the headlines before.

Bruns first made headlines in 2007 when she was a sheriff's deputy for Lake County and got picked up for her second drunk driving arrest.

Former Lake County Sheriff Roger Hartman said in 2007:  "It's a shock to us because we don't expect it. Law enforcement officers, in my book, are held to the higher standard."

Bruns lost her job after that.

Now, the Lake County Sheriff's office reports that just after 6:30 p.m. on December 9, 2017, it was called to a rollover crash just south of Madison.  Bruns was traveling north on 454th Ave when she left the road and went into the ditch, hit a field approach and rolled her car.

When a sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene, there was a case of beer in the road and beer cans in the car.

According to the report, Bruns smelled like alcohol and a breathalyzer showed a blood alcohol level of .250, more than three times the legal limit.

Bruns told the deputy she had been drinking in the morning before taking her 6-year-old and 8-month-old daughters to acute care in Sioux Falls.  She also said she had more to drink before leaving Sioux Falls.

Bruns' daughters were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released for their injuries.

Bruns faces three felony charges, including child abuse and her fourth DUI.

If found guilty on all counts, she could face up to 25 years in prison. She is currently out on bond and taking part in the 24/7 program.

She will make her initial appearance in court next week
