WORTHINGTON -- Marshall junior Mason Plante entered Tuesday’s boys hockey game as the state’s second leading scorer.

He needed only 41 seconds to get on the board against Worthington. Plante finished with two goals as the Tigers earned an 8-1 victory.

“Mason has been fast for a couple years now,” WHS head coach Paul Olsen said. “He’s just got such control over what he wants to do and he has such a vision out there. He can see the whole ice. He’s really tough to guard against because as soon as you put somebody on him and you think you have him covered, he can make one pass and totally fool everybody on the ice.”

Chase VanDeVere had two goals and three assists for the Tigers, while Bryson Whyte finished with two goals.

“We came out flat and just could not pick it up the rest of the game,” Olsen said. “We’d have one shift here or there where we’d play good, we’d put the body on them and the rest of the time we just did sweep checks and it was like we were afraid of them. I don’t know what was going on.”

Coming off their first victory of the season, the Trojans were looking to make it two in a row. But after Plante’s second goal of the first period -- on a power play and with 8.7 seconds remaining  -- WHS found itself down 5-0.

“We knew they were going to start quick,” Olsen said. “(Marshall head coach) Michael (Weiss) always does that, they’ll jump on you right away and they want to set the tempo of the game. We tried to prepare guys for that, but I don’t think they were ready for that.”

Worthington’s lone goal came with 32.8 seconds remaining in the second period. Anthony Fogelman took a pass from Tommy Bauman and Carlos Garcia-Villatoro and scored his third goal in the last two games.

“He was in the right spot,” Olsen said. “Tommy was waiting in the back and it was actually all caused by Carlos, who tied up the guy behind the net so Tommy could get free with the puck. All three of those guys were working together and that's what we need.”

The Trojans finished with 15 shots on goal, and were unable to take advantage of six Marshall penalties.

“Part of it was when we would skate up the ice, their forwards would catch us,” Olsen said. “We’d have a three on two and next thing you know they’d catch us and take it away and it’s a three one five. That’s one thing about their team, they are incredibly fast and that’s hard to compete with.”
