Play imagines Martin Luther King’s final hours in Memphis
Just in time for the observance of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and Black History Month, the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe presents the area premiere of “The Mountaintop.” Katori Hall’s play imagines what might have happened between King and a maid inside his Memphis motel room hours before his assassination. A.K. Murtadha, who played King in “All the Way” and “The Great Society” at Asolo Rep in the last two seasons, returns to the role, opposite Emerald Rose Sullivan. Chuck Smith directs the production.
“The Mountaintop” opens Saturday and continues through Feb. 18 at the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, 1646 10th Way, Sarasota. Tickets are $42. More information: 941-366-1505; westcoastblacktheatre.org
