Appeal against release of Telugu version

The Madras High Court on Tuesday posted for orders on Wednesday an appeal preferred by Staar Movies, represented by its proprietor Shanthi Thiagarajan, mother of actor Prashanth, to restrain producer K.E. Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green from releasing the Telugu version of Suriya starrer Thaana Serndha Koottam on Friday.

Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose heard elaborate arguments advanced by senior counsel A.R.L. Sundaresan representing the appellant, P.S. Raman appearing for Mr. Raja and R. Krishnamoorthy, representing TSK director Vignesh Sivan, and said that the orders on the original side appeal would be delivered on Wednesday.

Mr. Sundaresan contended that Staar Movies had obtained the rights to remake a Hindi movie titled Special 26 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada in 2014 and transferred the right to remake the movie in Tamil and Telugu alone to a firm named RPP Factory, which in turn had entered into an agreement with Mr. Raja of Studio Green.

Claiming that the right given to RPP Factory was only for remaking the movie both in Tamil and Telugu separately, the counsel contended that TSK’s producers had, however, remade the movie in Tamil alone and dubbed it in Telugu, which was against the agreement.
