STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Freeskier Liam Baxter punched his ticket for the Revolution Tour with a top finish in slopestyle event Saturday at a qualifier in Copper Mountain.

Baxter, who competed on the Revolution Tour last year, had already qualified in the halfpipe but added slopestyle to his list of events last Saturday by winning the 14-15 youth mens division. He edged out Konnor Ralf of Montana in the final results of that event, highlighting a strong day for Steamboat Springs athletes.

Baxter also won the halfpipe after topping Edwards skier Jack Ganely for the top spot in the results of the YouthMens division.

"Liam had previously qualified in the halfpipe, so he was already in," said coach Tony Lodico. “Winning slopestyle qualified him into the slopestyle portion of the Revolution Tour, as well."

Snow conditions, and the possibility that the site of the event might be needed for an upcoming Grand Prix halfpipe, forced organizers to host both the halfpipe and slopestyle events on the same day — something that Lodico said the local athletes took in stride.

"They skied well," Lodico said. 'They all had a good day, and we saw a few first tricks. That is always pretty good to see at the first event of the year and shows that some of that summer work paid off and our kids landed on their feet, which is what we want."

Baxter’s teammate Riley Jacobs also had a good day winning the halfpipe in the  14-15 youth womens division. She has also already qualified for the Revolution Tour in that event.

Other top Steamboat finishers in the halfpipe included Cale McCarthy's third-place finish in the 12-13 boys division. His teammate Wiley Wagner was ninth and Owen Taylor was 13th in that same division.

Other top finishers in the 14-15 youth mens division included Charlie Greene, who skied to a fifth, and River King, making his freeskiing debut and placing sixth in the halfpipe.

In slopestyle, McCarthy was sixth, Wagner was 15th, Logan Spiegel was 19th and Taylor was 21st in the 12-13 boys division.

Steamboat also had several other top finishers in the youth mens division with  Silas Leeson finishing ninth, Alex Spiegel 10th, Greene 11th, Will Gossman 12th and King 13th.

Michael MacBlane was sixth in the junior mens division.

Alex Spiegel landed a backflip in competition for the first time helping him jump into the top-10 of his age group, and Jacobs’ top finish was fueled by a Flat 3 — a trick that she spent hours working on this summer on the water ramps at Bald Eagle Lake near Steamboat.

Both Baxter and Jacobs are expected to compete in February at the Revolution Tour scheduled for Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire.
