95% of employees took part in strike in Vellore district

As the bus strike continued for the fifth day, several employees of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) staged a demonstration along with their family members on Tuesday.

According to S. Parasuraman, district secretary of CITU, about 700 to 750 persons took part in the demonstration near the regional office of TNSTC near Rangapuram.

Main demands

The demands of TNSTC employees include wage revision and payment of dues for retired employees. The employees want a minimum basic pay of ₹19,500 and a wage hike of 2.57% once in three years. The transport unions want the State government to settle pending dues for employees who had retired since 2013.

Mr. Parasuraman said that 95% of TNSTC employees were taking part in the strike in Vellore district. He alleged that the authorities were putting the public at risk by recruiting temporary drivers to operate government buses.
