Shops downed shutters in rural Coimbatore on Tuesday to protest against the central government’s move to close Government of India Press (GIP) at Periyanaickenpalayam.

The protest call was given by Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam at an all-party meet recently.
Besides frequent protests by harried employees, members of various parties blocked Coimbatore to Mettupalayam Road last Saturday against the closure of the press.
The political parties and other welfare organisations have decided to intensify protests if the government does not drop its move to close down the press.
