DUBAI: A businessman rained punches on a cabbie in a speeding taxi, jumped out and fled shirtless after the taxi rammed into a car, a court heard on Jan.9.

The African man flagged down an Afghan cabbie in Al Khail Gate and requested him to transport him to Al Quoz residential area on Jul.23, 2017. On the way, he paid him Dhs50 to deduct Dhs12. The cabbie pulled out some Dhs489 to sort out change. “He grabbed it and tried to jump out. I grabbed him by the shirt. He repeatedly punched my face,” explained the cabbie.

They engaged in a scuffle as the taxi accelerated. It rammed into a car. The businessman’s shirt got torn. He jumped out leaving the shirt on the seat. His DNA on the shirt helped Bur Dubai Police Station personnel nab him. In court he denied and presented a defence memo. The ruling will be on Feb.11.
