Consumer forum gives relief to airline

more-in

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) on January 5 dismissed a revision petition filed by a complainant from Tamil Nadu, who had alleged that he had suffered huge loses after Singapore Airlines misplaced his luggage.

Complainant K. R. Balasubramaniam had alleged that on reaching Hong Kong from Coimbatore, he was informed of his missing luggage. Further, he alleged that due to the loss, he was unable to enjoy his tour as he was left without his essential belongings.

Alleging deficiency in services, he demanded a compensation of ₹2 lakh from the airlines. Allowing the complaint, the district forum in Coimbatore had directed the airlines to compensate the passenger ₹1 lakh. However, the respondents submitted that the luggage was delivered to the passenger within a day.

“The complainant was without luggage for 28 hours and for which the award of compensation of ₹1 lakh ordered by the district forum appears to be disproportionately high,” the NCDRC held in its order, and directed the airline to pay the complainant ₹10,000.
